Support » Plugin: Backup and Restore WordPress - Backup Plugin » Deleted WordPress Directory After First Backup With Default Settings!

  • Resolved rouchos

I just finished building a website. It took me 5 days working piecemeal. So I decided to download your plugin and backup my work.

Upon downloading, activating your plugin, using your defaults, I backed up my website.

After backing up my work – i discovered I could no longer upload media – images, PDF etc. I was getting generic 500 error messages.

So I began the process of troubleshooting that issue – I disabled all the plugins one by one – then all, then enabled them one at a time and the issue persisted. I checked the htaccess permissions. Nothing could solve that issue – which remains unresolved since using your plugin.

Upon troubleshooting that issue, I discovered that my root directory for, on my FTP SERVER was gone. In its place were a number of backitup folders given generic names. backup-1520266630-plugins

I managed to find my media library folder which WAS MOVED after using your plugin from to a generic folder.

I have another 4 websites with wordpress on the same FTP – THIS IS THE FIRST TIME, I have encountered this issue.

I suspect the solution is a full reinstall, which means I have lost 5 days of work, but on the off chance, is there any guidance you can provide about restoring all the wordpress files into a parent directory?

Really disappointed to have to write this support ticket.

@rouchos sorry to hear you are having such difficulty. We have more than 20k customers using wpbackitup daily so I find it very unlikely that wpbackitup would do this to your site. We run wpbackitup on our site as well so if this kind of issue existed it would impact as well. I suspect that your site was hacked or someone maliciously deleted your root folder. The folders you are seeing are likely the temporary ones we create to contain your backups.

With that said, I do understand that this type of issue can be very stressful. The good news is that if the backups still exist in the folders you mentioned then it may be possible to restore your site.

If you would like my team to take a look at your site then we would be happy to review and provide some guidance. If you would like to proceed then please create a ticket on To review we will need ftp access info which should not be posted to this public forum.
