Support » Networking WordPress » Deleted Plugins in Single Sites, not Network – did I break something?

  • In a spring cleaning frenzy I accidentally deleted all the plugins in the two Single sites of my Multisite blog.
    When I look at the plugins in the Network Dashboard they are all still there and activated (and they work, hooray). However, when I check the plugins on the Dashboards of the individual sites, the plugins are no longer listed.

    Did I break something there? Apparently all is still working fine. I just want to make sure and wonder if there’s a way to bring them back into the single-site list of plugins? (bar installing them again, that is)

  • A “Network Activated” plugin ought not be listed in the plugins list on a sub site. The plugin is on and doing what it should on every site in the network if “network activated.”

    (This may not have always been the case going back a few years, but is for recent versions of WP Network.)

    You say you deleted a plugin from the sub sites. Now, that is a curious thing to say. How did you delete them? Only the SuperAdmin can delete plugins from the Network Dashboard. Also curious is that you suggest you saw a plugin both “Network Active” and listed on an individual site before you deleted the plugin. Something fishy there, since a) you have no way of deleting plugins on individual sites, and b) if Network Active, they would’t be listed.

    yes I agree, it looks very weird to me. However, I have to say that I’m a newbie with this. I had the blog set up by a pro, but I’m now trying to figure things out by my own (and making mistakes).

    As far as I can reconstruct it, here’s what I did: In a spring cleaning fashion, I went on the Network Dashboard and deleted all plugins that where not used. I can’t recall what the attribute was, I guess “inactive”.
    Then, I went on the sub sites, showed the plugins that where “inactive” and deleted all those.
    THEN I realised that this had taken out every plugin, since all of them where inactive.

    As to your question how they could be listed on the sub sites even though they where network active – I’m not sure, but isn’t it so that network plugins DO show up on individual sub sites so that they can be activated on some, but not network wide?

    I should have added that I used WP 3.5.2.
    I just upgraded to the latest WP and added two more plugins. Those do now of course show up on the sub sites again. What I realise is that I can indeed NOT delete them on the sub sites. So apparently that was still possible with 3.5.2.
