Delete user but keep them cited on posts?

Just curious if anyone knows the best way to make a user inactive yet still keep their posts attributed to their profile? I don’t want a bunch of unused writers sitting around for security issues but I also don’t want to delete them and have their posts attributed to another user. Is this possible?
