Defining PODS in our theme for version control like git

As we develop our themes that include pods, we utilize staging version and sometimes development versions in addition to the live site. Git makes keeping things in sync largely a matter of just doing a git pull, and then much of the site is synced between the different versions. If we could do this with PODS it would save us a lot of time and user-input errors. We’ve been doing this for years with Custom Post Types from before ever learned about PODS, but have made the switch. Is there a way of encoding particular pods into the theme code so that we can more easily keep them backed up and in sync?
