Defining elements in PHP so they can be edited separately

  • How can a wordpress user define elements in PHP, so they can be edited separately to other elements?

I want a featured post’s excerpt to sit above an image, for example, but in normal posts I want the excerpt to sit below the image. Also, I want to reduce the width of the normal posts’ list (but not the featured post at the top) so I can insert a new column next to it, but all the posts are in one div and I cannot edit the featured and normal posts separately.

What can be done here? I’m using the Origin theme and WordPress 3.4.2.
