 * Hello good people,
 * Please help out a novice.
 * I have a multisite where I would like the default behaviour to be that when an
   image is inserted, there is a link to the file. At the moment, the default behaviour
   is no link, which is problematic for all sorts of reasons I won’t bore you with.
 * I have tried using plugins, changing mysite.com/wp-admin/options.php and changing
   image_default_link_type, I have tried finding this in my theme (twenty thirteen,
   although I see the behaviour in other themes too), and I have tried adding snippets
   to my theme’s function.php. That is totally the limit of my skills.
 * I’d be eternally grateful for some assistance.
 * Cheers,
    Rob.

 * Hi [@judgerookie](https://wordpress.org/support/users/judgerookie/),
 * Yeah, what I want is for the default behaviour of the blog to be that when a
   user inserts an image, it links to the file rather than no link and therefore
   not be clickable/enlargeable.
 * Does that make sense?
 * I’m still unsure how to do this.
 * Cheers,
    Rob.

 * To clarify:
    1. user as in the person logged into WordPress and writing the post?
    2. links to the file as in the actual image file?
    3. unsure on the last bit regarding ‘therefore not be clickable/enlargeable.’

 * 1. yes, the person writing the post, when they insert an image, I’d like when
   they press ‘insert media’ into a post, that the image comes with a link to the
   file, eg [http://theglobalschool.net/sbc/teststudent/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/04/img_2295.jpg](http://theglobalschool.net/sbc/teststudent/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2018/04/img_2295.jpg)
 * 2. Yes, a link to the actual file, see above.
 * 3. Note that on the page [http://theglobalschool.net/sbc/teststudent/2018/04/27/clickable/](http://theglobalschool.net/sbc/teststudent/2018/04/27/clickable/)
   I can click on the image itself, whereas on this post I cannot: [http://theglobalschool.net/sbc/teststudent/2018/04/26/the-first-post/](http://theglobalschool.net/sbc/teststudent/2018/04/26/the-first-post/)
 * Thanks for your help!

 * okay, with you and thanks for the clarification.
 * seems like adding the image is fine for you so will skip that bit BUT from the
   original link:
    [https://codex.wordpress.org/Inserting_Images_into_Posts_and_Pages#Image_Link](https://codex.wordpress.org/Inserting_Images_into_Posts_and_Pages#Image_Link)
 * using the above link, follow **step 5** at the crucial point when inserting the
   image.
 * when **Insert media** box is open and you’ve just selected the image
    make sure
   that in the **Attachment Display Settings OPTIONS** (usually bottom right) you
   select the **Media File** option
 * these are the options:
 * > Attachment Page: Links your inserted image to its WordPress media attachment
   > page.
   > **Media File**: Links your inserted image directly to the original,
   > full-size version of the file. Custom URL: Allows you to set a custom link
   > URL for your inserted image to link to when clicked. None: This setting will
   > remove the link completely, rendering the image “un-clickable”.
