I am having the same issue as well. In the general settings if I check a category under “Default Expiration Category” this value is not saved. I’ve also confirmed that this is not a cosmetic bug as the default category is not used when the post expires.
I am having this problem as well. It says that the changes saved and the category I checked is unchecked and is not saved as the default expiration category. I use this plugin on another website and it works fine. I put a ticket in with WP Engine and they did a lot of troubleshooting and then told me that I needed to contact the author of the plugin. They also gave me this information if it is helpful:
There are some functions that are disabled on our infrastructure. These are listed in this support document:

I just saw a thread about the compatibility of Post Expirator with the latest version of WordPress. This makes sense the other site my company has – where Post Expirator works fine – is not the most current (3.8.1) version of WP.
Any chance there will be an update to the plugin to make it compatible?
Are you all using wpengine? I have not yet been able to reproduce the issue.
I’m running WordPress 3.8.1 on a local development system using the latest version of MAMP.
Version 2.1.3 is on its way, should fix the issue. Sorry for the trouble everyone!
Thanks for your help looking into this issue. It’s greatly appreciated.
