Support » Plugin: Yoast SEO » Decent but intrusive UI and too many updates

  • We’ve used this plugin for a while on various client sites and it has done the job, but we are now actively looking for a simpler/cleaner replacement. Main gripes:

    1. UI is too intrusive. I find it very annoying when WordPress plugin developers choose to style their plugins to stick out too much over standard WordPress. If they have paid version and its worth it then great advertise it on settings page and let client/agency make that choice, but constant reminders (however subtle) to paid version in sidebars and through styling/links that make plugin UI stand apart from standard WordPress causes confusing experience for basic users. Also the way the SEO section on post types is designed is far too cluttered and messy.

    2. Far too many updates (and UI changes). Their claim is ‘constant improvements’ but I’m afraid I’m a little more suspicious and think it comes down to promotion. Based on what this plugin does there really is no need for some many updates. As agency we offer to manage client plugin updates (and test them prior to update) and we are getting a bit fed up with Yoast for this reason.

While this is one of the top SEO plugins, and has a good track record, and I think works well for inexperienced users, for us we have decided to move away from it for the reasons stated above. Was tempted to give 3 stars, but for functionality it provides to basic users then 4 is justified.
