Does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with persistent spam?

I am getting the same bit of spam over and over, and whilst I have comments down to moderate, it is getting a pain in the arse having to do it manually all the time.

Is there any way I can write some rules to ban posts with certain phrases in, or any other automated technique?

Or use the one that comes with wordpress, Akismet, http://akismet.com/

Akismet and bad behavior meant that I’ve very rarely had to deal with any spam myself.

If you’re getting the same piece of spam over and over you could copy bits of it into the excluded words filter.

Yeah I do what mrmist suggested. Everytime I get spam comments I pick out words that spammers tend to use (but no one else- you don’t want to block good comments) and put them in the excluded words. Things like “manhood” and “insurance”

I would also suggest adding in places they normally link to. I have a list or things like .info, .ru, .hk, .pl, .it, all as banned terms. It gets rid of much of the spam even before any other sort of filtering.

And if you have one guy in particular who spams non-stop there’s a great plugin for banning people
