Support » Fixing WordPress » Deactivated plugin, can't access dashboard

  • Hello,
We recently deactivated the bbpress plugin, and now are no longer able to access our admin dashboard. There is no error message, there is just a blank gray page. We cannot reactivate the plugin as we cannot access the dashboard to do so. We’ve asked help on the bbpress forum, but it does not get nearly as much traffic as these boards, so we’d thought we would try here, too.

We are not terribly technically savvy, so if anyone has simple steps or explanations, we would appreciate it.

    The site is http://www.englishhound.com

    Thank you for any help!

Perhaps you had another plugin dependent on bbpress and is now causing an error? (just a guess). At any rate, to try to get back in to admin, I recommend temporarily disabling all plugins.

If you can’t access your admin pages, you’ll need to use an FTP client (like FileZilla), or your host’s cpanel (or File Manager) and navigate to the files on the server.

In your WP installation there, find wp-content/plugins and rename that plugin folder to something like plugins-hold. That will disable all plugins and hopefully allow you to get back into WP admin. Rename the folder back to the original. Then you can start re-activating plugins until you find the problem one(s).

If that doesn’t do it, likewise rename your active theme’s folder so that WP will use a default WP theme temporarily. That way you can rule out whether the theme is at fault or not.

Before checking to see if it was fixed, first clear your browser cache and cookies.

If this is beyond what you’re comfortable doing, try asking your web host to disable them for you. Some are quite good at helping out.

Can you post a screenshot of the issue, also do you notice any JavaScript errors on your debugging console? http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors

    Try activating WP_DEBUG mode.

Thank you all, I appreciate the replies.

I accessed the cPanel and renamed the folder. That allowed me to log back into WordPress admin. However, reactivating the plugin and renaming the folder back to the original name interfered with other plugins and caused the site to disappear (blank screen only) and the dashboard to be significantly altered. We were able to revert back to a backup from earlier in the day, which put the site and dashboard back to normal. We will leave as-is until a developer is able to examine the bbpress plugin more closely.

Thank you all again, I appreciate it.

Thank goodness for backups, eh? Glad you got up and stabilized again, at least for now. Good luck with this.
