ok i am getting more confused by the minute. i created a free wordpress blog yesterday and have been reading about all these wonderful widgets and plugins. how do i incorporate these things into the sidebars?
so far i have read about downloading the wordpress zip file and then opening a file called wp-config-sample in a texteditor and editing it by adding id and password and then uploading everything! upload where??
in my wordpress dashboard i can open up 'presentation' and see another tab called 'sidebar widgets'. when i click on this i get a page with a few widgets at the bottom which i can drag and drop to the sidebar menu. is that it? how do i get more widgets in there?

You don't. If you have a "free" blog at wordpress.COM, then:
    a) post to their forum: http://wordpress.com/forums
    b) live with what they offer.

All your readings about the self hosted WP blogs (that use the software downloaded from here - wordpress.ORG) are irrelevant in your case.
