• Good afternoon – really really need help here. Have a self-hosted WP account that was working perfectly fine until this morning. This morning, all ot the WP content vanished along with the themes. Fortunately, was able to resurrect the theme from a backup. But cannot locate the database anywhere.

To my knowledge, I had backed up my entire server data from cpanel in one fell swoop a month ago… but I can’t find the WP data on that backup anywhere! Unfortunately, I didn’t make a separate backup.

Can someone please help? I assume it would be a *.sql file, but is that even accurate? Is there any way to locate or resurrect it?

    Thank you!

  • In your old site backup, review the db info in wp-config.php (usually that file just needs to re-uploaded if it contains the proper information)

Yes. You can restore your site from the sql file, excepting the images that are located in your uploads directory. If you made a complete site backup, look for the latter mentioned directory also.

Thank you both for the quick response! I can’t seem to locate a wp-config file in the backup. I see wp-content, wp-includes and wp-admin folders, but no files or folders named wp-config. Any ideas?
    Thank you again.

It will be in the main folder (at same location as the folders you mentioned), if site was backed up properly.

Just to confirm, I’m looking for a folder called wp-content? There’s a file with that name, but it’s a 3K documentation file, not my file. Otherwise, doesn’t look good. Is there any hope at all if the file/folder isn’t in my backup?

Nope. The file will be IN the same folder (of thebackup) and the folders wp-content, wp-admin, wp-includes.

Contact your host to gain the information required.

I meant wp-config, sorry. Partial good news – I’ve found all the posted photos in the backup in the upload file: wp-contents/upload. I just ran another full backup and still don’t have a file wp-config. It’s not in the previous backup or this one. Any ideas where it might be or what else it could be called?

Ask your hosts if they have a backup they can reinstate.
