    We all do stupid things…
Today, my stupid thing was updating the WordPress installation automaticaly without backing up my database.
So now WP can’t find the post titles, body, attachments, comments, etc.

(afterwards) I went to phpMyAdmin and downloaded a backup file of the website’s database. It’s still a big file like it was some time ago (around 10 MB), which leads me to believe all the info is still there.

In phpMyAdmin, I can directly browse the database entries and check the post’s text and stuff like that. So it’s definitely all there.

But for some reason, WP can’t access it. I checked WP-config.php and looks like it’s still pointing to the same database.

Can anybody advise on what went wrong with this update?
How can I make WP find/translate the database once again?

    Thanks!

  • Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

    Thanks, Esmi.

I will try that later on when I have some time (doing that while working and taking up phone calls is a bit hardcore for me at the moment).

Just to clarify something, do you mean adding “-old” to the theme folder currently in use, so that WP defaults back to some other theme?
Don’t I need to activate the Twenty Eleven in Dashboard? (actually, tried that now, but still no posts appear under Twenty Eleven).

    Thanks!

Yes. WP will automatically activate the default theme (Twenty Eleven).

Ah… I assumed you couldn’t access the Admin area. I’d still suggest doing the plugins folder reset, though. If that fails too, then it becomes more likely to be a database issue. Do you have any recent database backups?

    You were absolutely right!
It was a conflict with some plug-in called Adhesive (that I can’t even remember what it’s there for…).

Will back up my database weekly now!

    Will back…

    Thanks, Esmi!

    Best regards.

    Glad I could help 🙂
