Database backup –> Difference between my actually manual backup download from my hosting service, and the Updraft backed up file….

Just started using this plugin.. Thanks a bunch.
Normally I have been doing manual backups of my database.. ie.. login in to my hosting service.. and download the .sql.gz file.

Just as a “test” I did this… and also ran Updraft database backup… downloaded it.. and thusly did a compare of the two files using WinMerge.

I noticed a bunch of differences.
I did some reading before posting here.. and found some info…
    ie: http://updraftplus.com/faqs/what-format-are-backups-made-in-is-it-nasty-and-proprietary/ and FAQ’s…
    and some other posts….

Before installing UpdraftPlus yesterday.. I would do my normal database download backups a number of times a day…

From what I have read… I would not have a problem.. in a catastrophic situation.. using Updrafts backed-up database for recovery in my MyPHPAdmin..
Just as I would have done previously… with my own backups.

Sorry for the long post here… just wanted to be clear…

But ! Why is the file I would normally use as a database backup.. so different from Updraft’s file ? (obviously I unzipped the files before comparing). And looking at the actual data in the files.. and alas obvious differences in the file sizes…
My database download size approx 9,918 kb
UpDraft database size approx 9,934 kb

My hosting company is a very well known one.. using a good version of C-Panel etc etc.. so I don’t think they are doing anything out of the norm for the database backups.
    Thanks !

    Hi,

The difference in size will be the different amount of comments, whitespace, etc. that is generated by the two different pieces of software. Also, if the backups were taken at different times, the data in the database may have changed.

UpdraftPlus also orders the backup differently. A database dump through something like cPanel will output the database tables in their default order. UpdraftPlus puts the wp-options table first, as this is the most important to be present.

There should be no need to worry about the differences between the two. If you are concerned, you can always test restoring the UpdraftPlus backup through phpMyAdmin on a fresh test database.
