    Hi,

If you assign new registered user no role or empty role by default, then dashboard will be unavailable to him. Such user will see permissions error message.

I need the role subscriber to read the post, if I remove all checkmarks in the User Role Editor, what happens?

Just see. Can unregistered user (casual visitor) read your blog? Yes, she can.
‘read’ capability from subscriber role allows just access to the ‘Dashboard’-‘Home’ and ‘Profile’-‘Your profile’ menu items at the WordPress admin backend.

I removed the tick to everything but the dashboard is always

Just check if everything was made as you want: user you test has the same role you edited, role you edited has no capabilities really.
My test shows ‘You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page’ when I try to open wp-admin under user with empty (no capabilities) role.

I can give an example of the setting. thanks

I see that your ‘Subscriber’ role is unchanged. It still has ‘level_0’ and ‘read’ capabilities included or turned on. Try to switch them off and make your test with one of users with Subscriber role again.
