[resolved] Dashboard not displayed in 2.0 with semiologic (8 posts)

    Hello Everyone,

    I installed wp 2.0 bundled with semiologic 3.2 tonight. Initially, the dashboard was visible, now when I go to the dashboard, nothing is displayed, no error, just a blank screen. I suspect it has nothing to do with the index.php file in the wp-admin folder, because I can re-name the file and get the same exact results. The CHMOD for the file is 644 as are all the php files (I am on hostland hosting for this installation), but like I said I think it has nothing to do with the file itself. No matter what theme I activate, same result.

    I installed a wp 2.0 using the regulus theme yesterday also on hostland.com and the dashboard displays just fine.

    Anyone else ever have this struggle? Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your consideration of the matter.

    this is actually a wp bug. last time I encountered this, disabling the wp planet feed fixed this. edit /wp-admin/index.php, locate (line 146):

    $rss = @fetch_rss('http://planet.wordpress.org/feed/');

    and replace with:

    //$rss = @fetch_rss('http://planet.wordpress.org/feed/');
    $rss = null;

    Yeah... *sigh* -- I wish they had debugged WP 2 a bit more...

    Well, by the end of the day here, for some reason, the dashboard is not displaying again. I checked, and the code at line 146 did not mysteriously change back to stock. It is still as you (Denis) recommended.

    Any more ideas?

    Thanks!

    there are other rss feeds:

    line 18:

    $rss = @fetch_rss('http://feeds.technorati.com/ ...

    can be changed to:

    // $rss = @fetch_rss('http://feeds.technorati.com/ ...
    $rss = null;

    line 129:

    $rss = @fetch_rss('http://wordpress.org/ ...

    can be changed to:

    // $rss = @fetch_rss('http://wordpress.org/ ...
    $rss = null;

    One or both of those additional changes did the trick.

    Thanks once again!

    I have just had to deal with the same problem (ie Dashboard failing to load until the @fetch_rss lines were commented out) but it only happens on one of two hosts where I am running WP so I am not sure that it is a WP bug rather than a problem with the host setup.
    It's a relief to find I am not the only one with this issue and I wish I had checked here before going through the process of deleting bits and pieces in order to narrow it down to the offending code, but I would prefer not to see the issue classed as "resolved" until there is an explanation posted (or a bug fix announced if it really is a WP problem).
    Thanks.
    Alan
