Support » Fixing WordPress » Dashboard blank out of the blue (left menu buttons visible)

  • Out of the blue my dashboard home screen is blank on login, but not completely — I have access to the left menu but each button yields a blank result. Haven’t updated plugins, theme or wordpress in quite a while so it doesn’t seem related.

I tried renaming the plugins folder as well as the theme folder and neither worked.

Here’s a link to a screenshot of the dashboard in debugging mode.

I’ve been hesitant to update to a newer version of WP (I think I’m using 3.3 but not sure as I can’t see in the dash) as the theme I’m using stopped being supported by the developer a year or so ago. Should I try anyways?

@prometheus Fire: Intentionally using 3.3.1 for compatibility reasons with a no longer supported theme. Haven’t updated plugins or theme in months…

@marilynyu: Looks like we do indeed have the exact same problem — certain menu buttons work and others (native wordpress ones) yield a blank result. This is something I just realized and maybe this holds the key?

    Dashboard – blank
    Posts – blank
    Media – blank
    Links – blank
    Pages – blank
    Comments – blank
    Slides – works
    Portfolio Items – works
    Testimonials – works
    Alyeska – works
    Appearance – blank
    Plugins – blank
    Users – blank
    Tools – blank
Settings – blank except for most plugin settings
7 additional plugins at bottom of menu bar – all work

I just went back in time replacing wp-admin and wp-includes folders to 3.2.1 and now everything seems to work. I’ll see if its possible to update again…

It probably has something to do with php version.

I’m at bluehost with the same problem, opened a chat with them and in 1 minute the rep. changes php from 5.4 (new version) to 5.2 – and the problem was solved.

After that i’ve upgraded my WP to 3.8 and then changed php version back to 5.4, now all seem to be OK.

I ran into the same issue after upgrading PHP on our test site to 5.5.9 in preparation to upgrading to WordPress 3.8. This post resolved my issue. Hope it helps someone else.
