Hi. I recently fixed an issue with CSS not showing admin dashboard correctly – but when logged in the side menu/text was only icon strip and the collapse icon at the bottom failed to expand the menu.

I have switched off plugins / themes to check for errors. expanded the browser size and copied some wordpress admin folders from an installation to try to over write any broken elements in the wordpress install files – that might control the menu settings – no change.

I have backups that I run on Wamp localhost – the restored backup from the live site works fine – the menu and text show ok.

question is there an easy fix to sort this issue – I tend to think it is the basic wordpress files that are preventing the text showing – I never use the collapsed menu so it can be made to permanently show – if a line of code can be injected somewhere in the config etc?

Not an expert on WordPress or coding so help appreciated – as I have tried most internet and forum suggested fixes – without success.

    Thanks

  • Hi @jostler1000 welcome to the WordPress support forums. Does everything else work but the sidebar in the admin? If you try to expand the sidebar, does it expand?

The website is fine, it was only the icon “>” last on the left side menu that failed to expand the text descriptions instead of the popup text (that worked).

I had a another go at the issue and disabled all plugins and then re-enabled one by one – nothing worked, then I updated the theme and suddenly the menu worked.

I tried the same on my second site – used a different theme and when I enabled a stats plugin to menu also worked on that site too…

So I am baffled as to why it occured in the first place, affected 2 of my websites and was solved by different means.

So all is good…. so to others with this issue – focus on disabling plugins and re-enable each – test the icon – then lastly I enabled security plugins… The theme was not offered as an update during the issue – but popped up as an update after WP5.6 was installed…

The exact cause is a mystery, but not related to WordPress – but to 3rd party Theme or plugins affecting the way WordPress responds…

Any further issue I will use the forum to get help.

    Thanks
