• Hi, I have just found out that I shouldn’t have cut and paste from MS Word. It has completed ruined my site’s look. After finding out this, I have tried editing the posts by completely deleting everything and pasting from Notepad. But still the posts don’t work properly (bold when not supposed to be, etc). Is the only way to delete all my posts and start again?

Has anybody got any suggests how I can fix this mess I have created without having start all over again?

By the way, how do I put a link on here – what code should I use? I don’t understand the ‘allowed tags’

    Regards Tezzer

  • go to users and change your profile to remove the checkmark from using the rich text editor.

then go back to your word doc, select all, copy, paste into notepad. then select all, copy, go to the post, select all and paste.

to post a link in the forums, just paste the URL

I tried what you suggested with one post, but it still came out wrong. Or do I have to do it with every post I have made so far (all were done in MS Word)? If you go to my page, you will see the first couple of posts are as they should be, but the bottom ones are bold and the Comment line is missing on one post too??

Am I doing something else wrong? Could java script be causing the problem?

Uh, for me your blog looks fine (IE 7, FF, and Opera 9)

I am using IE6 and its not showing correctly on mine, and on other computers I having checked. If you look closely, the top two or three posts show my text ‘normal’ but the later ones show ‘bold’

This problem also occurs in my next pages as well on some posts.

Or do I have to do it with every post I have made so far (all were done in MS Word)?

    Absolutely, YES!

And check this post; that’s where the bold things start somewhere… I suspect some bad code.

Okay, I will go through all my posts and delete everything and start again. Or would it be better to delete all my posts completely and start again? What a headache!!! First of all I will delete post you suggested and see what happens. But tomorrow….

Moshu, I deleted that post and my from page is looking good again, but I still have problems with my other pages. I will go through tomorrow and do a full clean and never use MS Word Again.

As a suggestion. I would be a good idea to have this problem highlighted somehow as a WARNING. I think many people fall into this trap without knowing it.

Thanks everyone: If I have any more problems I will get back to you, but I think I will be able to solve it from here.

Just a note to say that I have fixed the problem now. But what a headache. After reading the forums I found many people who have fallen into the same trap of cutting and pasting from MS Word. This really causes problems. I haven’t seen any warning signs about this (maybe I am not looking in the right places). Anyway, if a moderator reads this, it would be nice to have a sticky in big bold letters warning people about this, and, of course, other dangerous no no’s. I did read one quite humorous post about it, but I only found that thread after I had already started pulling my hair out.

Anyway, thanks everyone. I am now not going to use the rich text editor anymore (not that that is a problem – it is just easier to see problem code using the basic editor), and I definitely will not go anywhere near MS Word. I do want to keep the rest of my hair.

Turn Off Smart Quotes in Word

This is a problem whenever Word is used for *anything* Web-related, including email. The text may look okay in Word and other Microsoft programs, but people using other programs may see gibberish. The issue is Word is a word processing program intended for print, and it embeds printer commands in the document that are not visible within Word; these then may get translated into gibberish in Web programs.

You *can* use Word to write text, but you’ll need to turn off the “Smart Quotes”:

Tools > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type
Uncheck “straight quotes with Smart Quotes”

Diane – it’s much more than the smart quotes. Word inserts formatting for fonts, colors, bold, italics, and so on, that doesn’t work nicely with wordpress… For example, word uses <b></b> for bold text, and WP (and any XHTML) uses <strong></strong>

Plus in the copy+paste, somewhere, things just get borked. It ruins older posts, you name it. The messup is different for everyone, but the bottom line is the same. Just don’t use Word or anything like it, unless you’re prepared to copy what you’ve written into a plain text editor like notepad (no, not wordpad) before copying THAT and pasting it into WP.

    The solution is this plugin:

    http://www.ndsinternet.com/blog/archives/2006/08/wordpress-plain-text-paste-plugin

On installation: when installing the plain text plugin two important points….
    1. make sure pathways in lines 30, 31, 33 of the nds-paste.php file are correct for your site.
    2. make sure to clear your cache.

    Lady D,

Your advice on pasting from Word via Notepad worked! I can finally get my site started. Only took me 12 hours to figure out how these gd web hosting thingies work. Thank you.

    Jack C.

The solution is to install a half decent text editor that is fit for purpose. Notepad++ for Windows users.

If you have the Visualize Advanced Features plugin, you’ll have a toolbar button in your WordPress editor specifically for pasting from Word. šŸ™‚
