# Customising the theme

 * Hi I am brand new to Word Press so apologies if these questions are really basic
   But I’m struggling to find the answers. I am quite experienced with HTML & CSS–
   is it possible to change colours in the theme or add background images etc? Thanks,
   Pete

 * Absolutely. Sounds like everything you need to do can be done by adjusting the
   css. It’s easiest to find the values you want to change using Firebug. [Here is a tutorial](http://jleuze.com/inspecting-wordpress-with-firebug/),
   in case you haven’t used it before.
 * You should never edit the theme files directly, but you can try using [a custom css plugin](http://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=custom+css),
   or [adding a child theme](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/customising-the-theme/codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes?output_format=md)
   and only changing some css.
