Customer email not getting passed to order

I am using the checkout form extension. I have a billing_email field and a confirm_email field. Both are getting passed to the order as I see them in the email I receive, but the email address field in the order is blank, so the customer is not receiving an order confirmation email. Where does the order get the customer email address from, if not the billing_email field? I cannot delete the billing_email field, so do I just need to disable it and create and plain email field? As you can tell, I’m pretty new at this and would prefer to avoid coding if I can, but I will if necessary.
