Support » Plugin: Custom Post Type UI » Custom Taxonomy Sub Categories

  • Resolved carterkay

I am trying to add child/sub taxonomies to a main taxonomy, similar to how the standard categories system works in WordPress.

Is it possible to create a child/parent link to custom taxonomies? Or do I need to create it via custom post types.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

If you haven’t already, set the custom taxonomy to be hierarchical. That registers it in the way where you create parent/child terms like you get with the default category taxonomy. Leaving hierarchical set to false treats it more like tags with the text input that does auto-suggest and the like.

    Thanks Michael, that’s fixed it.

I realised that the reason the Custom Taxonomies weren’t showing was because WP was still displaying an older CT I created and not the new one with the child CT’s selected.

The problem I have now is that WP is displaying older CT’s, even though I have deleted them in CPT UI,,, so I was thinking of starting from scratch, can you please recommend the best way to do this (like a reset button, or do I need to update the PHP files)?

Were you originally registering them in the theme or some other plugin that may be active? Or are you referring to the terms in the taxonomies still being present?

For the first part, it’s possible you’re still registering them there and thus why they are still showing as registered in your UI. I have no way of knowing where those may be, so that’d be up to you to comb the files.

If you’re meaning terms, I have to believe there’s some way to do term cleanup, but I don’t know of any offhand and we don’t have that built in to CPTUI as a feature. If anything, it’d be a case of re-registering with the same taxonomy slug temporarily so that the UI is set up again and you can do bulk delete there.

    Okay I see, thanks.

I think I have created CT’s in both the plugin, and also once in the right hand column, creating one or two more.

I have deleted everything in the plugin, re-created the correct CT (Sectors) and it’s working fine now, but when I go into a post I can see some old ones hanging around, see here

I’ve found this solution of removing CT’s, do you think this would work?

    Thanks for your help.

For terminology clarification, the highlighted spots in your screenshot are terms in the “Series” taxonomy, they’re not taxonomies in themselves.

The approved answer for the stackexchange link provided is the most elegant option. How to best go about doing that and only as many times as needed(in cases where you may have 100s of terms) is up for debate.

Would be just as easy, especially for a small handful of terms, to just use WordPress’ UI to delete.

“WordPress’ UI to delete” Damn, I didn’t see think of that,, I just looked on the Sector CT and found them,, al deleted now,, thanks for your help.

    Welcome 🙂

    Hi @carterkay,

Just stumbled upon your request for help and I see @tw2113 was able to help you figure things out.

Ironically, what you have achieved here, on this page ( is exactly what I’m aiming to achieve.

Is there anyway you could share your sample code with me so I can edit to fit my needs please.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance…!
