Support » Plugin: Custom Sidebars - Dynamic Widget Area Manager » Custom Sidebar keeps changing to Default sidebar when using Tags or Categories

  • I have a test website I created with Artisteer
    I’m using WordPress 3.5.1

My client now wants 2 sections within it – each with their own dedicated sidebar with Menu, Categories and Tags.

I’ve set it up using the following plugins: AVH Extended Categories, Ultimate Tag Cloud and Custom Sidebars

Using these (plus WordPress’s Custom Menu widget) I’ve been able to achieve what the client wants.

The only downside is that when someone selects a Category or Tag in the Menu, the correct information appears on the right BUT the menu on the left changes to the default Sidebar. Fortunately, since I keep the default Sidebar empty, its not too distracting – but it does mean people have to click on a page to bring the correct sidebar back

NB. The Custom Menu widget doesn’t cause this problem

Is the problem caused by the Artisteer theme or have other people encountered this with other themes?
Or is this an Ultimate Tag Cloud Problem?
    Or AVH Extended Categories?
    Or Custom Sidebars

  • It would help if I just had confirmation if other people don’t have the problem of Tags and Categories causing the Custom Sidebar to change to the default sidebar. I don’t know if the problem is unique to me – or if everyone experiences the same problem …

    Hi Nick,

Sorry about the extreme delay here.

I can’t replicate your issue on my test install, I checked your link, but didn’t see a 2 sidebar area?

Could you confirm that the correct link is

    I’m here to help 🙂

    Kind Regards

    Hi Jack

The links have changed in the intervening months and I’ve partially solved the problem since I posted it.

Here are new links to the 3 custom sidebars, but you only need to visit the first one:

Here is what I’ve been able to fix:

Previously, clicking on a Category or a Tag would call up the default sidebar. Now only the Tag brings up the default sidebar. Plus I’ve designed the default sidebar to make it work in conjunction with 3 different custom sidebars.

Here is my solution for Categories (kindly suggested by Helga D of Artisteer):
Firstly, in Posts – Categories, create parent categories and make all existing categories children of the parent categories.
Go to Appearance – Custom Sidebars – Default Sidebars. Go to Default sidebars for archives – Category archives – then select the parent categories and allocate the appropriate custom sidebar to each of them.

    Default sidebars
Since it is unavoidable that clicking on a Tag will change the custom sidebar to the default sidebar, the trick is to design the default sidebar so that it makes sense for any custom sidebar. In my case, I have 3 custom sidebars so I have a caption saying:

To carry out a new search, click on a database below:

followed by links to the 3 main pages carrying the custom sidebars. This is a little inelegant but at least it gives the viewer an easy way back to the custom sidebar they started with.

    Hope this helps?

I hope you are well today and sorry about the delay here.

Thanks for the additional information, that certainly does help and I can see what you mean now and I’ve managed to replicate the issue on my test install.

I’ll notify the lead developer for you.

    Thank you!

    Kind Regards
