Custom post types and calendar plugin

I need some plugin suggestions for custom post types and calendars. I have wordpress experience but I’ve never needed to use custom post types.

I am creating a site where the client wants to list events. They want to create a sales page for each event and have it saved as a custom post type and be searchable by category. They also want to utilize a calendar plugin to display these events in calendar and/or list view. They want the calendar to be searchable by category as well as “miles from zip code.” In each view, they want to control what is displayed an as excerpt then click for rest of the content.
