Custom Post Type to WordPress Category

I have a Custom Post Type “Listings” which has their own list of categories.
The default WP Posts also have their own list of Categories.
I would like to be able to display both Post Types (default and custom) under the main WP category list. Otherwise, I have duplicate categories. There must be something I’m missing or a plugin that could help. Any input is greatly appreciated.

How did you create your Custom Post type ?
The process is different if you use code in your functions file, vs. using a plugin like Custom Post Type UI.

See here to add the CORE categories to post type :

Programmatically you can do it when you register the post type :

Thank you for your reply.
Custom Post is an Event created by an Event Plugin.
The Events have their own categories, which do not display in the main default WP posts or categories and I would like them to be able to display in the default WP categories.

TY for your quick reply.
I did not see that, but like everything, maybe it’s not available with the core plugin, but I’m sure there’s some sort of work around…even if it’s exporting as feed and importing or something else.

I’m not sure what you mean about exporting a feed.

– uninstall the plugin
– look in the plugin files to see where the Event post type is being registered
– edit the register_post_type to include the core Categories :

– re-install and activate the plugin

Of course, updates to the plugin may overwrite your changes!

Registered post types are stored in global $wp_post_types. It’s an array of WP_Post_Type objects. You can directly set or unset properties as well as call its methods. A few lines of code and you are done.

I doubt if there is a plugin to do this as it is pretty specific to the custom post types / needs.
