Support » Fixing WordPress » Custom Post Type Archive Trouble in 3.5

  • After upgrading to 3.5 I’m having trouble with my archives.

I have a custom post type with an archive called events. The archive template for that custom post type (archive-events.php) is getting displayed for my category archives instead of the generic archives template (archives.php).

Did the template hierarchy change? Do I need to specify a category archive template?

    Thanks!

  • In case anyone else runs into this, creating a copy of my archive.php file and naming it category.php seems to have resolved the issue.

In my theme I want regular archives and category archives to display the same way, so I didn’t have a separate category.php as it seemed unnecessary.

It appears that in 3.5 it is necessary.

Is this a bug with the template hierarchy or is this expected behavior?

I’m seeing this too. Makes me wonder if it’s been working incorrectly until now. I’m also having to duplicate the archives template out for tags, authors and dates as well. Would be good to know if it’s a new feature in wordpress. They didn’t mention anything about it in the changelog that I could see.
