Support » Fixing WordPress » Custom .php page, with static content, but dynamic nav/sidebar

  • I’m having trouble creating my own page, for example photography.php. I’d like to be able to code the main content column in the PHP file, not through the WP write page interface, and still maintain all the default includes for the sidebar/nav/header etc…

Putting the photography.php page (basically a modified copy of page.php) in the same DIR as the page.php and single.php etc doesn’t seem to be working as only an empty page shows up. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have a simplified working example of this they could show me? Is there some secret folder I need to create ( doubt it)?

  • You cannot ‘create’ a Page – you just create a Page template. You can “code the main content column in the PHP file” but it still will be a Page template and you’ll have to go into the admin area > Write > Write Page and make a new Page without typing anything in the text area. Of course, in the Page Templates dropdown select your recently created template.

how come i cant find the page template dropdown??

ah… that’s coz my default theme is not the one with the page template thingie..
