• I’m stumped and hoping a permalink expert can help me:

My website http://www.etny.net has a custom permalink structure: /index.php. I then use the “Custom Permalinks” plugin on all my pages. This works perfectly with the pages but does not work with the posts. In order to publish a post I have to click on the “get shortlink” button and copy from here (example = http://www.etny.net/?p=2048) the /?p=2048 portion and paste it into the permalink field. If I don’t do this, or if I enter my own permalink, the result is the same: The post will take me to the homepage. It will display fine in the archive, but the post itself will redirect. The category archive is http://www.etny.net/thedigitalfrontier.

    Anybody see a solution? Thanks!

  • Have you changed the permalink settings? You can find it under Settings > Permalinks.

I have. When I change the permalink structure back to ‘default’, all of my posts work perfectly but all of my pages go down completely. Even if I assign a new custom permalink to a page, I get a ‘page not found’ error message. So I’m thinking somewhere in some file is an instruction that all pages must start with “index.php”. But I did a site-wide find/replace, with no luck.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

What is the plugin you are talking about? Why have you used that?

The plugin is called “Custom Permalinks”. When installed it adds a field below your page or post title, where you can enter a custom permalink. I have used it because I want my URLs to be more search engine friendly and readable.

Have you tried deactivating it to see if that works?

I have tried deactivating the plugin and changing the permalink structure back to default. When I do both, all pages go down. When I just deactivate the plugin, half of the pages go down. When I just change the permalink structure, all of the pages go down.

I wish I know where to begin looking. Any ideas?

I’m deducing that that the problem is not in the “custom permalinks” plugin but in the custom permalink structure. When I change the permalink structure back to the WordPress default (http://www.etny.net/?p=123), posts go live with custom permalinks but pages give 404’s. So I’m thinking that the custom permalink structure (/index.php) is sitting on some file somewhere that is telling the website that all pages should have the /index.php structure. My problem is that I don’t know where to begin looking.

Any idea what files would inform the website on that level?

    Thanks a lot,

    Jordan
