  • I have an odd problem that I’ve never encountered before. I just finished a new site. I’m about to release it and take it out of maintenance mode, but there is a problem.

    I just created a custom menu for it the other day and everything was fine, but when I log out and log in (or when I’m logged in to the wp-admin for more than a few minutes) the custom menu starts deleting some of my custom menu selections that I placed in it. I have saved everything properly and have built more than my fair share of custom menus in wordpress. This is really odd and I’m stressing because the release date of this site is tomorrow and I cannot figure out why this is happening. I’m using Optimize Theme by woothemes and I’ve never had a problem with this theme before. I have no menu plugins working so it makes absolutely no sense. Has anyone had this type of issue before? And how do I solve it?

    I’d give a URL but it would be pointless as the site is in maintenance mode and you wouldn’t see anything anyhow.

    Thank you for your response and the link you sent, though I don’t believe that is the issue….here’s why…

    …my situation is that it allows the additions to the menu and then slowly removes them one by one over time (sometimes it takes minutes and sometimes it takes hours).

    Furthermore, it appears that via your link, the standard is set to 16 max, whereas I am only trying to add a total of 10 menu items.

    Any other ideas?

    I’m sorry, I meant 11 menu items….not that 11 instead of 10 seems to make a difference, but it’s best to be exact I assume.

    EDITED: Also, it’s important to note, that I am NOT receiving any kind of time out issue. The menu items appear just fine and then shortly after they disappear. I have rebuilt my menu over 15 times in the last 24 hours trying to figure out what the issue is.

    Does the same thing happen with Twenty Eleven?

    I will test that out and let you know. If it doesn’t happen with Twenty Eleven, then I will forward everything to WooThemes. But I’ve never had this happen with this theme (or any WooThemes) before. Woo does pretty good work.

    I’m stumped….it’s crazy. I’ve actually been trying to get it to reproduce the problem for the last hour or so and have had no luck…go figure. I deleted the menu entirely and then “added and saved” each button…one by one…hoping it was a save issue….we shall see. I will let you know my results by the end of this evening. Thank you Esmi.

    Is the loss of menu items cumulative?


    So, this is odd, but for some reason, it has corrected the issue. I deleted the entire menu, and created an entirely new menu. Then I added each link to the menu and saved each link as I added them to the menu. I did this one link at a time….add link, save, add link, save, etc.

    Since doing that (yesterday early afternoon) I have had no problems. So I don’t know if it wasn’t saving correctly, or what, but for some reason it seems to work now. Thanks for all your help in the troubleshooting department. I appreciate it. 🙂

    I’m glad it’s finally working but not knowing what caused the weird behaviour in the first place is vaguely annoying. I guess you’ll have to write it off as a “temporary server issue” – which is just shorthand for “We haven’t got a clue what happened”. 😉

    LMAO……That’s the only thing I can think of. I’d love to blame it on GoDaddy, but since it’s a dedicated server, it’s not their fault…this time.

    I’ve seen a few posts about this, but none of them were truly relevant to my issue…and YES IT IS FRIGGIN FRUSTRATING to not KNOW FOR SURE what the cause of it all was. I’ll be pissed if it happens again and I can’t fix it next time. Though, by the threads, the overall menu saving and allotment issue seems to be on a proactive list for some of the wordpress developers, so hopefully the next update comes out (with a fix for this type of issue) before it arises again with this site.

    @esmi: Murphy’s law just went into affect. The menu has auto-deleted some of the pages again….crap.

    So to describe the issue more…

    There have been no patterns of deletion thus far. Sometimes it’s 3 buttons, sometimes it’s 8. And it isn’t always the same buttons…it’s super odd.

    Are menus gradually reduced over a period of time – eg 2 items lost then a further 1 an hour later?

    Gotcha…It could be, but I notice it when several are missing at once. However, I am not 100% sure as of yet, but it seems that when I edit a post or page, the issue arises. I could be wrong, but it seems that the problem arises when I add, delete, or edit a post/page. I could be looking too hard for a reason…idk

    So this could be related to database updates, yes? Have you checked your server error logs? Anything useful in there?

    @esmi…..Sorry for delayed response…..been super busy with other projects. I swapped the themes and tested a post and it caused the same issue. I’m still new to servers so I will read up on checking Server Error Logs and get back to you….I want to get this resolved for my client asap. Do you have any suggestions for the moment?
