I added 3 bigger flags named en_US.png, fi.png and sv_SE.png to the folder wp_content/plugins/polylang NOT the wp_content/plugins/polylang/FLAGS folder like it says to do. but my widget language switcher still uses the small original flags from the ../flags folder?

Did you check that the directory and the files have the right permission? Not that the flags should change only on frontend, not on admin side.

Did you put the flags in the directory 'wp-content/polylang' ? Not in plugins directory. You have to create the directory as Polylang does not create it. Did you correctly name the files? Did you check the permissions of the directory adn the files?

When putting the alternative flags in wp-content/polylang, these flags only show on the website and not in the administration panel (still the default flags). But I suppose that is the way it is meant to be?
    Thanks.

Yes, that's right. You can't change the flags on admin side, just in case the size is different from the default flags.
