Custom Fields

Is there a way to search across a custom field that has been added to the user profile? My site is for alumni of a school and the main search would be by graduation year, which is a mandatory field on the profile. But every list plug in I have found appears to be for basic fields. I see the add field option but that too appears to be standard meta data. Any suggestions? Thank you.
