  • My client is working with an ap developer and is having problems getting all of the events to show up in the mobile ap via RSS.

Here is message from ap developr…
“The calendar that you see on the website (http://www.las-cruces-new-mexico.org/events/daily-events-calendar) is unreadable by a computer (at least without weeks of programming work, and I’m not sure it would work even then). Part of the problem is the way events that happen every day for weeks are repeated each day (we need to specify a start date and end date in our system), but also the extreme complexity and many ways event dates and descriptions are included.

What we use instead is a format that was specifically designed for computers to read – the RSS feed. There is a link to it under the calendar, and I would guess that other people besides us would be interested in using that instead of the series of individual popup links on the main calendar – it could be imported into another calendar, for instance, like iCal or Outlook.

The problem is that many of the events that are listed on the ‘human-readable’ calendar are not included in the RSS version, so they never make it into our app. I’m not sure why they are missing, hopefully Art can figure it out.

For instance, the RSS feed includes these events for the next few days: Art Infusion, Celebrate Music, and 20th Anniversary Kyle Perry Ride Across America – but is missing these events: The Misanthrope, Live Theater: One Act Play Festival, 2nd Annual Gladiator Dash 2014 (listed twice), Annual Cinco De Mayo Fiesta, Volley Bash on Grass, Spikes for Special Olympics, Las Cruces Farmers & Crafts Market, Annual Las Cruces Tour of Garden, Janet Sung, Violin, etc.

I’m not sure if these are coming from a different calendar system, or if there are problems in generating the RSS feed – let us know if we need to try to get the events from a different source, but (unless we or you enter them all manually), we can’t use the calendar you see on the screen…”

What needs to be done to make this work?

The RSS feed is a standard RSS feed – which is to say that it’s a feed of the most recently added events. It doesn’t show the calendar events, it shows recent additions to the calendar.

I suggest using the My Calendar API if you want to fetch event data to an external source.
