Support » Plugin: The SEO Framework » Custom Breadcrumbs Text like in Yoast

  • Hi!

are the developers of The SEO Framework in this forum?

I wanted to ask if they would implement a custom-breadcrumbs-text-feature like it’s available in yoast-seo: https://yoast.com/app/uploads/sites/5/2017/04/Selection_001.png

Most themes pull the breadcrumb-text from the title, so there are some problems:

    1. Sometimes breadcrumbs are too long and therefore not very “nice”.

    2. It’s often not ideal for SEO (Anchor texts; First link priority) – This is the main point!

Of coure it’s possible to just change the title, but then the titles of the posts or pages are not “nice”.

It would be great to have such an option in The SEO Framework!

    Thank you,
    BR,
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,

The breadcrumbs in The SEO Framework aren’t displayed to the user via your content; but via scripts as structured data. If an element is too large, Google will trim it for you on their result pages.

Because of this, it’ll be unwise to change the anchor-text of it manually, as it may not be representing the content, and that can lead to penalties. I understand that many users among you are aware of this, but I can’t cater such brittle functionality to the masses.

However, I am considering moving the breadcrumbs to human-readable markup; from there, adjusting the breadcrumb will less likely lead to such penalties.

If you have more feature suggestions or insights for us to consider, let us know via GitHub. There, I can easily track what needs to be done; these forums get lost in time.

I already went out of my way to forward your suggestion to the related GitHub issue.

    Cheers!

    Hi Sybre,

thank you for answering the question! 🙂

I’m not sure if we are talking about the exact same thing.

I’m an expert in SEO and there’s no penalty for optimizing Breadcrumbs. The aim of my suggestion is to help the search engine understand the topic of a specific page better by optimizing it. This is completely White Hat SEO 🙂

That’s the reason Yoast also have such an option.

I could change the Breadcrumb-text already by changing the page-title. But often this isn’t a good solution due to many reasons.

Anyways, thank you for adding my suggestion to Github. It would be really really great if we could get such an option 🙂

    BR;

    Hi again, Daniel!

I’d like to have this feature too, but I hold off from it as it can lead to cloaking when misused; which many users unbeknownst may tend to do.

Please keep in mind that the reason Yoast SEO has the option is that they used to solely display the breadcrumbs via HTML, instead of just via a JSON-LD structured data script. When the structured data matches the content, Google doesn’t see it as cloaking, and that’s why it’s allowed.

With The SEO Framework, I’ll never add features that are against Google’s policies. As such, this will have to wait until I implement a breadcrumb-display functionality. I’m sure you’ll find more features missing in The SEO Framework as opposed to other SEO plugins; I don’t enforce things without giving it a second (rather, tenth) thought 🙂

Until then, you may find it helpful to know that you can currently influence the breadcrumb title by adjusting the SEO meta title.

    Cheers!
