# CSS not loading

 * I recently upgraded to 2.0.1 (Friday) and then to 2.0.2 (Sunday). My site looked
   fine on Friday. Now it does not:
    [http://www.stefanmedia.com/wp/](http://www.stefanmedia.com/wp/)
 * The CSS is not loading so the text is plain-Jane. It’s *possible* (is it?) that
   this was the case after my 2.0.1 upgrade and that my browser was serving a local
   cache of the CSS. Anyway, now it’s not working.
 * The only changes I’ve done since my upgrade to 2.0.1 is upgrade a plugin (shouldn’t
   have done anything bad) and upgrade my Mac to Tiger. However, my WP installation
   comes courtesy of Fantastico via my web host, so my Mac OS change shouldn’t have
   had any effect on that, right?
 * The plugin I upgraded today is called Tiger Style Administration 2.0.1, which
   changes the look of the admin pages. I got this working fine on Friday even though
   my plugin version was not the latest. Now the plugin has no effect (visually)
   on the UI, like it’s supposed to. I still see the default admin look.
 * Another clue: On the Presentation page of the admin area, none of the available
   themes shows its thumbnail. I saw the thumbnails on Friday. So CSS (if that’s
   a factor) was working then but not now.
 * I think the issue is a CSS recognition problem. Any idea what could be going
   on?
 * Thanks!
 * Stefan

 * Your upgrade seems to have broken the permissions on your themes folder. If I
   try to go directly to your [style sheet](http://www.stefanmedia.com/wp/wp-content/themes/red-train/style.css),
   I get a “Forbidden” error. This would also account for the thumbnails not showing.
 * Check your control panel or ask your host about the permissions.

 * Thanks for the reply. Could you please elaborate on what you mean by “check your
   control panel”?
 * I can use my FTP client or the file manager when I’m logged in to my web host’s
   admin page to change permissions. But to what? I see this page here about WP
   permissions:
    [http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions](http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions)
 * But the discussion could use some additional information. Such as: instead of“
   all files should be writable only by your user account” it should be followed
   by “(that means 666)” or whatever the number is.
 * So if permissions are the problem, do I make everything in wp-content 666 or
   766 or 777 or what?
 * Also, if I make anything 777, does that compromise security of the site?
 * Thanks!

 * 777 is bad. Always.
 * As a general rule of thumb, 755 for folders and 644 for files works pretty well.

 * Thanks, HandySolo! I made the permissions changes to all folders and files as
   you specified and now the CSS is being applied everywhere properly. 😉

 * Well good deal. Keep in mind (disclaimer!) I’m not an apache security expert *
   cough* I just play one on TV. But those permissions seem to be what most folk
   agree on as being reasonable.
