    Every time I click on the customize button, either in the top bar or on the WordPress dashboard, I end up getting this error:

    There has been a critical error on your website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

    I tried asking my host for support, but they are at a loss to why this could be happening, but they did find that this 500 error is being generated when accessing my customize page:

    Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Cannot unset string offsets in /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/class-wp-customize-widgets.php:1130 Stack trace: #0 /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(287): WP_Customize_Widgets->preview_sidebars_widgets(”) #1 /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/plugin.php(206): WP_Hook->apply_filters(”, Array) #2 /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/widgets.php(998): apply_filters(‘sidebars_widget…’, ”) #3 /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/class-wp-customize-widgets.php(378): wp_get_sidebars_widgets() #4 /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/class-wp-customize-widgets.php(355): WP_Customize_Widgets->customize_register() #5 /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(287): WP_Customize_Widgets->schedule_customize_register(Object(WP_Customize_Manager)) #6 /home1/britzgro/publi in /home1/britzgro/public_html/greenpointterminalmarket/wp-includes/class-wp-customize-widgets.php on line 1130

    I’ve done everything I can think of to fix this error, but I’m not sure why it’s happening. Here are the things I have done:

      1. Cleared cache
      2. Cleared my cookies
      3. Switched browsers ( I’m on Chrome, I tried Firefox & Safari )
      4. Disabled all Plugins
      5. Switched themes
      6. Reinstalled WordPress
      7. Upgraded my PHP Version
      8. Copy & pasted a working website’s class-wp-customize.widgets.php file over this one.

    So far nothing has helped & I am at a loss of how to move forward. Any help would be appreciated!

    If all those troubleshooting steps did not resolve the issue, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.

    Alright, I just tried to adjust the .HTACCESS file, but it did not help. Just renaming & deleting it ended up breaking the site, but when I tried to set it to the default WordPress .HTACCESS, it did not fix the issue.

    Thank you for the suggestion though!
