I have spent a lot of time unsuccessfully trying to figure why I get the “There has been a critical error on this website” while trying to register a new user through Woocommerce. However, an account with their e-mail is created and I can see that in the back end – WordPress dashboard.

I have deactivated all plugins except Woocommerce, Elementor and Elementor Pro. Since the site is still under development, I am not using any cache plugins. I’ve tried to login via incognito windows all to no avail. However, when I try to register as a customer via WordPress’ UI, I don’t encounter any issues. I am able to register a new user without a problem. However, when a user registers via WordPress UI, they are registered as a “subscriber”.

Any user registered via Woocommerce is registered as a “customer”, which is prefered. As mentioned earlier, all users who registered via Woocommerce, even though they get an error message, they are registered as “customers”.

Can anyone help me identify the problem?

I figured out what was causing the error after reviewing the log in Woocommerce settings. I’d copied the e-mail template php (for sending user registration confirmation messages) to my child theme. I inadvertently deleted a php closing mark “?>” while editing the template. This caused the error in sending the confirmation message.

In summary, the error was being caused after creating the user in my site. That’s why I could see the user in my dashboard, and still get the error on the front end. Hope anyone searching for solutions for an error finds my experience helpful.
