  • Hello,

    Since the last week of August, I have no access to the WordPress wp-admin, and no website on line. Just a screen with:

    There has been a critical error on your website.
    Learn more about debugging in WordPress.

    I’m not sure why this happened, but it might be the WordPress 5.5 update. What can I do to get access to wp-admin, and restore the website?

    Errors like this are logged. Check the error log on your server. If you can’t find the log, please contact your host.

    Meantime, enable wp_debug and wp_debug_log and after an error, look at wp-content/debug.log to see if anything gets logged there. https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/

    You can also try this: Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

    If you cannot access wp-admin, there are other ways to deactivate plugins.

    Thank-you for the prompt response — I now have access to the site again.

    I’m no programmer but I looked at the logs and noticed a plugin which auto updated on the same date as the website shutdown. I renamed that plugin by connecting through FTP and now I have access to the site and to WP-admin once again.

    So now I can update WordPress to 5.5.1, but can I enable the “bad” plugin again? Or do I need to find an alternative solution?

    The name of the problem plugin is Multisite Language Switcher.
