Critical error message appeared after updating to version 2.0.0

After installing version 2.0.0, the backend stopped working. I got the error message “There has been a critical error on this website” when I tried to login into my backend.
I couldn’t see a .maintenance file in the directory. I renamed the plugin path via FTP and was then able to access the backend again, but with an error message under the Plugins menu item. I then renamed the path back. After about 20 minutes, the backend was working again. The plugin was then deactivated.
Subsequent activation resulted in the error message “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.”Any help is appreciated.
