 * Hi
    I didn’t update wordpress for a while and when I did it with the last version
   I had a critical error and I can’t access my website anymore (as administrator
   or visitor). The only way to access my website is by FTP. How can I do? (I am
   not a real webmaster…) I have all elements saved (via FTP) and a bit old backup
   made with backuptrust (if I can’t avoid using it it’s better because it’s not
   the last version) Here is the error message that appear when I go on my page:
 * Warning: require_once(/home/cyclofambv/www/wp-includes/cache-compat.php): failed
   to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/cyclofambv/www/wp-includes/
   load.php on line 691
 * Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required ‘/home/cyclofambv/www/wp-
   includes/cache-compat.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/php7.0/lib/php’) in /home/
   cyclofambv/www/wp-includes/load.php on line 691
 * There has been a critical error on your website.
 * Thank for your help!
 * The page I need help with: _[[log in](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fsupport%2Ftopic%2Fcritical-error-after-wordpress-update%2F%3Foutput_format%3Dmd&locale=en_US)

 * Critical Error:
 * Errors like this are logged. Check the error log on your server. If you can’t
   find the log, please contact your host. Meantime, enable wp_debug and wp_debug_log
   and after an error, look at wp-content/debug.log to see if anything gets logged
   there. [https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/](https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/)
 * You can also try:
    – [manually resetting your plugins](https://wordpress.org/support/article/faq-troubleshooting/#how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-the-administrative-menus)(
   no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one
   individually until you find the cause. – If that does not resolve the issue,
   access your server via [SFTP or FTP](https://wordpress.org/support/article/ftp-clients/),
   or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to `/wp-content/
   themes/` and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force
   the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (
   theme functions can interfere like plugins).

 * Thanks t-p,
    I can’t log in so I tried FTP. I have removed all plugins and still
   had the problem. I even had some more lines describing new error so I put back
   this plugin (wp-super-cache) and came back to the original error message. I have
   removed all themes and reinstalled twenty twenty. Doesn’t solve the problem.
   What to try next? Is there a way to reinstal the old version of wordpress by
   FTP and do you think it could solve my problem?

 * First, try re-updating WP MANUALLY.
 * Download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file for this release (top right on this
   page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-
   admin and wp-includes folders on your server (NOTE: do not delete the wp-content
   directory or your wp-config.php file) Read the [Manual Update directions first](https://wordpress.org/support/article/updating-wordpress/).
