 * Hello, I have a new job and have been given very little information about the
website that I will be managing. Noone had updated the site plugins for some
time, so I started updating them and am now getting a “critical error” message.
It says “There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site
   admin email inbox for instructions.”
 * We suspect that the email may have been sent to a former employee whose email
address is no longer active, so we can’t access the instructions for how to get
   past the white screen.
 * We have determined that the site is hosted by a company called Digital Ocean,
but are unable to find any files associated with this website there (otherwise
I would disable the plugin that way).
 * Is there any workaround for logging in to a WordPress site if you can’t access
the files on the server either?

 * Errors like this are logged. Check the error log on your server. If you can’t
find the log, please contact your host.
 * Meantime, enable wp_debug and wp_debug_log and after an error, look at wp-content/
debug.log to see if anything gets logged there. [https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/](https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/)
 * You can also try this: Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of
the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one
to identify the source of your troubles.
 * If you cannot access wp-admin, there are other ways to deactivate plugins:  [https://wordpress.org/support/article/faq-troubleshooting/#how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-the-administrative-menus](https://wordpress.org/support/article/faq-troubleshooting/#how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-the-administrative-menus)
