Creating widgets area for homepage

Hi,
I want to create widgets area for my wordpress homescreen for the main content as i would like to remove whenever i needed i can do it via html and css but i want a more robust way to make it happen so i was thinking of wrapping each widget in a div and float it. problem is i m new to wordpress and i need to know how to make a widget area so it is shown under widgets in dashboard.
