Creating menus based on a custom field value

  • I am trying to create menus on the sidebar that populate themselves based on a custom field entry. Ultimately, I want to create menus that look like this:

    http://www.schuminweb.com/schumin-web/life-and-times/index.php
(look at the left side of the page)

What I want to do is to set a custom field, like, say, year, where all of the pages that contain that custom field value are output in a sidebar widget. I can’t seem to find a plugin or anything that will do such a thing, and so I don’t know if I’m missing something or not, but it certainly seems like something that the system should be capable of doing.

Any ideas? This affects only pages – no posts or custom posts.
