 * Hi all,
 * Using xampp to create a local site but it it giving me problems.
 * I’m been following the instructions here:
    [http://www.thegeekscope.com/how-to-copy-a-live-wordpress-website-to-local-windows-environment/](http://www.thegeekscope.com/how-to-copy-a-live-wordpress-website-to-local-windows-environment/)
 * The sql file is moved to the localhost database and my files are in htdocs. BUT
   when I go to [http://localhost/mysite/wp-admin](http://localhost/mysite/wp-admin)–
   and ask for my user/password, none of it works! I’ve tried the user/pw I would
   use if I were to log in online/ combination of admin/root/password but none of
   it work. I can’t get into admin on the localhost.
 * Any guidance on this matter greatly appreciated.

 * I believe those instructions are incomplete.
 * When you move a site, you must replace the old URLs and paths with the new ones.
   Some of these are stored in the database in ‘serialized’ form where the string
   length is stored along with the string. You must use special tools to search
   and replace the old values with the new ones.
 * If you replace an old URL with a new one of a different length, it will break
   the serialization, causing many different problems.
 * If the old site is still available, you can use the steps shown in this article
   to copy the site: [http://wordpress.mcdspot.com/2012/08/22/migrating-a-wordpress-site-step-by-step/](http://wordpress.mcdspot.com/2012/08/22/migrating-a-wordpress-site-step-by-step/)
 * If the old site is not available, and you still have a copy of the database from
   that site, you should be able to use this tool to make the changes: [http://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/](http://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/)

 * This is a little bit of a shameless plug, but I wrote this post with **VERY**
   detailed instructions on how to get things properly set up.
 * [http://www.evan-herman.com/enable-emails-localhost-installation-wordpress-using-xampp/](http://www.evan-herman.com/enable-emails-localhost-installation-wordpress-using-xampp/)
 * And it’s all written to follow along using XAMPP and Windows. It’s seemed to
   have helped numerous people since I wrote it, so maybe it will help you as well!
 * Evan
