Creating Custom Backend Functionality

    @stitch23red

    Hi,

    This is my first post in this forum. I have used WordPress on and off over the years and have recently revisited it in the hope of learning to use it more effectively.

    I have created a few custom themes in the past and have a reasonable grasp on how they function. I do however wish to learn how to create user customisable areas within themes, to be more specific, I thought in this case I would try to tackle integrating FlexSlider (www.woothemes.com/flexslider/) on the homepage of one of my themes and set up a custom control panel in the back-end from which the client can easily add, edit and delete images and captions.

    I do not wish to create or use any plugins but rather have it as a feature embedded directly in the theme (if that makes sense).

    In the past I have ‘assed’ my way through it, copying and pasting bits of code here and there but never really understood what I was doing and it limited me when I wanted to create my own functionality. I did find one tutorial which seemed like exactly what I was after but it got very complex very quickly. This is the link:(http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/theme-development/adding-a-responsive-jquery-slider-to-your-wordpress-theme/)

    Can somebody point me in the right direction, what I should be studying? (ie books, tutorials, documentation).
