Creating a test site (3 posts)

My site has been up and running for a few months now. I want to experiment with a different theme but I don't want the site to be down when I do it. I only post about twice a week.

My idea is that if I set up a test site on my host that's a copy of the current site, I can experiment with the new theme in the test site. Then, if I like what I've done, I can move the test site to the actual site. (I'm talking about folders in my cPanel.)

I've done this once and paid a really fine consultant to do it for me. I just don't have the money -- even though his rates were very reasonable -- to do this again.

I came across an article about how to do it, but it involved BackupBuddy. And I don't have the $75 to buy a copy. In the review of BackupBuddy on WPHub, it said that doing this manually, that is, creating the test site without BackupBuddy, is not all that difficult.

So I'm writing to ask if someone could direct me to detailed instructions somewhere that would tell me how to do this?

Set up a local installation of WordPress with MAMP or XAMPP, download your database from your live website and use it with your local installation.

    Experiment away.

Thanks, mokah, I'll give it a try.
