• I recently started doing some SEO improvements to this dog training website: dogsdayoutseattle.com but am still a newbie to WordPress.org.

Currently, the homepage (Awake theme) is set as a posts page rather than a static page, which does not allow me to edit the home page. I would like to create a static home page and have read the Codex tutorial on it. However, it doesn’t explain how to do this for existing websites.

Currently my home page code lives in index.php. I’ve tried to copy that code and paste it as HTML into a New Page (thinking I can just transfer/copy the code)and create a static from that.

If I need to create a static front page, how do I take the code/design that was added into the default homepage without losing it?

I don’t even know if I’m asking this right. I understand how to create a static front page, I just don’t want to lose the design elements that she added to the default “Posts” homepage.

It’s exactly the same for all sites – new or old – creating a static front page.

No – that will never work. If you do not your new static home page to use the default page.php template file, then you will need to create a custom page template. If you name this new template front-page.php, it will automatically be applied to a static front page.

Hi esmi – thank you for the response. Do I name the new template front-page.php even if the content I want lives in index.php?

I just realized all my home page content lives in the Awake Theme ‘Homepage Content Editor” which really screws up the ability to do anything with SEO. In order to use the Homepage Content Editor (where she has designed the entire home page) you have to select your Front Page Display as the Posts option. Will creating a new template still allow me to automatically transfer this content to a new static (front-page.php) page? I can get into their forums without login information which looks like you only get through membership.

index.php does not have your content your content is in database which will displayed using a template like what @esmi suggested create a custom template and that will show in Page Attribute when you create static page.
