Support » Fixing WordPress » Creating a local copy from a manual backup

  • I want to make a local copy of my site so that i can work on with out affecting my live site.

    I make a manual backup by
    I. exporting the database
    II. copying all the files from my live version using FTP

    I do the following on my local enviroment:
    1. create a new database to match setting in the wp-config file
    2. create a new user with the name and password to match the wp-config file
    3. change wp-config so it looks for localhost
    4. import the database from my SQL file
    5. copy the files into a folder inside htdocs
    6. using a browser i try to access the site it tries to run install.php

    I cannot get to my new copy and if i go ahead and follow the setup it creates a blank new site. Can somebody please help me and
    a. explain why wordpress does not think it is installed.
    b. get it load the site not run the installer

    thank you very much in advance

  • Hello.
    In your step No. 2, this will refer to a database user and password, just to be clear. 😉

    If you create a blank new site, then WordPress is installed. Visit your database manager and drop the tables for the newly spun site, and import your SQL file.
    You’ll likely have to wrangle URL differences.
    Tools like WP Migrate DB Pro are hugely useful.

    Never had a problem copying/moving a site.

    1.) it has something to do with your wp.config. If you established a connection meaning your on the right track but that doesnt end here. You’ll need to update urls too to avoid links into your live site.

    You can do manual SQL or use WP tool Export/Import.
    via SQL:

    UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = REPLACE(post_content,’http://www.yoursite.com’,’http://localhost/foldername’);
    UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = REPLACE(guid,’http://www.yoursite.com’,’http://localhost/foldername’)
    UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = REPLACE(option_value,’http://www.yoursite.com’,’http://localhost/foldername’);

    via Import/Export

    into your editor (ie. notepad++) ctrl+f and do find and replace all link to your localhost link and then save, then import it.
