Support » Themes and Templates » Creating a custom theme – will this be easy?

  • Ok I have been reading the wp docs for the past day and have been trying to get my head around how to create a custom theme. I have mocked it up in PS to show exactly how I want it. A link is Here

The horizontal navigation bar will be for static pages, and the hover style for it will be the black gradient button as present on the home button.

The black bars in the side bar are for titles such as “Categories” and “Archives” then with a simple text links below for the content.

Does this look like it will be an easy theme to create? Or am i going to give myself some headaches if I set about it myself. I have some very basic css and html/php knowledge.

  • Hi there, I’m no expert to be sure, but it looks possible
First I think, and don’t take this as gospel, you need to create your design as a real web page, then when you are happy with the look in IE Firefox etc you need to put your code into a theme.
Headaches for sure, but worth the hassle when it works.
Generally I think themes are set out, when you look at the files into, as far as your initial design is concerned:

You need to fit your design around the php in these files and keep checking source code for div order.
It took me a fair while, and I’m still here seeking help and advice for similar stuff. Hope this helps in your efforts. Good luck
