    This may be a foolish question but can (should) you create a child theme of twentyten using another theme – such as one from Theme Forest or Mojo? Or should I make a child theme from the original theme template itself?
    The reason I ask is as I change themes around obviously I don’t want to lose changes when updates are available.

    Thanks songdogtech. I think that answers part of my question but can you take ANY theme and attach it to the twentyten theme as a child? Is that advisable or foolish?

    You can use any theme, you would not reference twenty ten if the parent was another theme.

    Twenty Ten Parent

    /*
    Theme Name: Twenty Ten Child
    Template: twentyten
    Version: V1.1.1
    */

    Lets say we had a theme called “Lightning”

    Lightning Theme Parent

    /*
    Theme Name: Lightning Theme Child
    Template: lightning
    Version: V1.1.1
    */

    So the Template entry lets WordPress know what the parent theme is, no reference to twenty ten needed only if twenty ten is the parent.

    Got it – thanks
