Support » Themes and Templates » Creating a Child Theme – difficulties

  • I have looked at previous posts on this and cannot see any obvious mistakes in my CSS code but still saying Template missing when I go to activate it. The site is: http://sirmoor.2ndgoorkhas.com/ it will be a renewal of a site built in Serif WebPlus. Built for charity (I am a newbie to WordPress so likely to be asking quite a few questions I am afraid as I was volunteered to do all their sites for free and have had to learn everything from scratch,)
    Code I am trying to use for the child theme below:

    /*
    Theme Name: mh-magazine-lite-child
    Theme URI: http: //mysite.com/
    Description: This is a custom child theme I have created.
    Author: my Name
    Author URI: http: //mysite.com/
    Template: mh-magazine-lite
    Version: 0.1
    */
    @import url(“../mh-magazine-lite/style.css”);

    Using my FTP I have loaded the CSS script above in the following folders ie
    Themes
    -index.php
    -mh-magazine-lite
    -mh-magazine-lite-child
    – style.css
    into the style css of the child folder is the following code:
    I keep getting the error message saying stylesheet is missing.
    I have been puzzling this for over three weeks and cannot get the child theme to work and it is important that I get the child theme to work.
    Please any suggestions on this.
    (I have posted this before but did not get an answer to this. Some say that creating a Child Theme is easy and yet getting an answer has proved very difficult.
    Many thanks
    Nigel

    are you trying to make changes to templates are mostly the appearance?

    if you are thinking making mostly appearance changes, you might find it easier to use a CSS editor plugin instead of trying to make a child theme.

    Jetpack plugin has a CSS editor available.

    I needed to have some bespoke menus on particular pages and needed to create a few lines of code to go into the themes function php file.

    Thanks for replying to this.

    Hi Nigel,
    As you are new to WordPress I recommend installing this plugin to help you quickly create that child theme. Hope that helps. Cheers

    Hi Contentiskey and Sunny – thanks for your suggestions which I am looking at now. Have got my child theme working now need to see how best to customise it with things like on page menus; change colour of menu font, change size of menu boxes etc.
